If you’ve been around the bend at one time or another, you’ve probably realized that entrepreneurship isn’t easy. While fear or self-doubt are factors that stop many from pursuing their dreams of starting their own business, I feel like there’s one thing that tends to outweigh the rest: motivation.
If you currently have or used to have one, take a minute and think about your job. What motivates you to work hard? Most likely it’s a combination of several things. Impressing your boss, not letting your co-workers down, nabbing that raise or promotion, helping the company succeed, etc. You were essentially motivated because of the structure and expectation tied with your job.
Entrepreneurship is a completely different ball game. You are giving up the security and comfort of a regular paycheck to dive into the unknown. Entrepreneurship doesn’t come with the same structure and expectation that a traditional 9-5 job does. You are on your own and it’s up to you as to whether you’ll be successful or not. This can make it extremely hard to stay motivated all of the time. There’s a reason people often have a rough time when they enter this unfamiliar world.
Fortunately, these 10 tips will help you maintain motivation and you’ll be able to achieve anything you set your mind to.
1. JUST GET STARTED
I’m sure you’ve heard the physics principle, “an object in motion, stays in motion”. I feel like that could certainly apply here. It’s time to stop thinking about how you need to get started, and just do it! The easiest way to find motivation is just to get moving. One you get started, it will be that much harder for you to stop.
2. KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE
Create a vision of the goals you want to accomplish. Are you committed to those goals? Are you willing to make sacrifices to achieve them? If you know that you’re committed and dedicated to your goals, you’ll find it that much easier to stay motivated.
3. FOCUS ON THE JOURNEY
If you only focus on the end results, your motivation is going to die fast. Instead, focus on the journey and the steps you need to take each day to make accomplishing your goals a reality. Remember the amazing things you are learning along the way!
4. GET RID OF TIME-WASTERS
It is far too easy to get sucked into watching a Netflix series or scrolling through your friend’s vacation photos on Facebook, but are these activities going to help you get closer to achieving your goal? Probably not. Set aside the time-wasters and learn to focus on what is the most important. Hold yourself accountable so that you don’t give into these distractions.
5. MAKE A PLAN
Create a schedule, and stick to it. Fill out your calendar each week with the things you need to do and when you need to do them. Act as if the items you plan to accomplish during the week are appointments that you can’t miss. Remember, if your goals don’t take priority in your life, it will be easier to push them to the bottom of your to-do list.
6. FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER
Do you find that it’s hard to hold yourself accountable sometimes? It’s usually easier for us to let ourselves down, but we tend to not let others down. Find an accountability partner who you can report your progress to. You’ll find that it’s easier to stay on track when you have someone who can encourage you to follow through on your promises.
7. REWARD YOURSELF
Have you been dreaming of a tropical vacation? Or looking to purchase the latest gadget? One of the best ways you can find motivation and to stay on track is to reward yourself. Keep your reward in mind as you work on your goals, and then once you accomplish them give yourself that reward you worked so hard to earn.
8. EARN YOUR BREAKS
If your goal is that important to you, then you should start earning your breaks too. Cut your goals into smaller chunks that are easier to chew, and focus on completing one of those chunks before you give yourself some time to relax. You’ll find that this will help you stay focused longer and you’ll be able to achieve your goals faster.
9. DON’T LET YOURSELF GET BURNED OUT
Burnout is easy if you aren’t careful, especially when you are feeling extra motivated. If you are feeling exhausted or can feel fatigue setting in, take a walk, do some meditation or simply rest for a bit. Your body and mind will work their best when you give yourself some time to recharge.
10. NEVER GIVE UP
Last but not least, even when the going gets tough, don’t give up. Everyone has experienced their shares of heartaches failures at one time or another, but that’s no reason for giving up on your dreams.
