As an entrepreneur, you have a lot of challenges ahead of you. Some of the most difficult of those will be how people you respect respond to your ideas and dreams. You may have friends, family, or colleagues who look at you and say, “Well, that’s great in theory, but you’re not actually planning on quitting your job, are you?” This kind of comment can really make you question whether or not you’re doing the right thing, or it can be a challenge to prove them wrong and show the world what you’re made of. It all depends on how you view it and how you think of yourself.
Believe it or not, the things you say to yourself every day will have a much bigger impact on your success as an entrepreneur than anything your parents, boss, spouse, coworkers, or friends have to say. So, if you want to be a successful entrepreneur, I highly recommend that you banish these thoughts from your head right now.
“WHAT WILL THEY THINK OF ME?”
Worrying what other people will think of you is a sure way to ruin your day and take your mind off of the task at hand. As an entrepreneur, you’re going to take risks that other people won’t understand. You’re going to pursue ideas that other people don’t find valuable. And you’re going to put yourself out there, which means that other people will look at you and judge you for any number of things you do.
But you can’t worry about any of that. If you do, you’ll start making decisions based on what others will think of you, not what’s best for you and your business. Focus on taking the path you know is right for you. Trust your gut, your heart, and your brain to carry you through, no matter what other people think.
“I CAN’T TRUST ANYONE.”
Trust is a funny thing. You might not want to give your credit card and Social Security number to a stranger you meet on the street, but you have to be able to trust the people you work with. As you grow your business, you aren’t going to be able to do everything on your own, and you’re going to have to delegate a lot of tasks and responsibilities. Learning to trust yourself and the people you’ve hired and partnered with will give you a huge leg up in the business world.
“I DON’T KNOW IF I CAN DO THIS.”
Okay, so there aren’t any guarantees in life, and, no, you don’t know that you can found and build a successful business. However, if you do your market research, build a solid business plan, know your target audience, and understand how your business can grow over time, then you’re taking a very calculated risk. You may not absolutely know whether your business will succeed or not, but you do know that you can take the steps necessary to achieve success.
And you do know that you can learn from failures and continue to move forward with more knowledge and experience for better results in the future. Let go of the self-doubt that comes with statements like, “I don’t know if I can do this,” and you’ll be on your way to success.
In general, if you want to be a successful entrepreneur, you need to let go of a lot of the doubt that others will try to pile on you. Don’t worry what others think, learn to trust yourself and the people you work with, and stop doubting your abilities.
