Do you ever wonder what makes successful entrepreneurs tick? Have you ever asked yourself how you can be more like people like Sir Richard Branson, Daymond John, and other men and women who’ve started from scratch and built empires? Well, the first step in the process is to learn to empower yourself for success.

If you’re like most people, you constantly have doubts, fears, and negative self-talk flying around in your head. When you look in the mirror, the first things you see are the bags under your eyes, the extra pounds around your waist, or those acne scars left over from high school. Likewise, when you think about starting your own business, you think of all of the obstacles in your way instead of the opportunities and advantages you may have.

You are your own worst critic, but you don’t have to be. You can learn to change the way you think so that you can empower yourself, feel more confident, let go of the fear of failure, and take the first step (and the next step after that) toward success.

First, bad things are going to happen in your personal and professional life, whether you start your own business or not. Bad things have happened to you before, and you survived, right? So why are you so scared of the potentially bad things that could happen if you strike out on your own?

Instead of letting the fear of failure, bad luck, and bad business decisions paralyze you, use that fear to your advantage. List everything you can think of that could go wrong. Then take that list and create contingency plans for each instance. Guess what? You just wrote an important part of your business plan. In other words, you’re already on your way.

When bad things do happen, it’s easy to get stuck in a loop, thinking, “Why is this happening to me?” A savvy entrepreneur will take that question and turn it on its head, instead asking something like, “What can I do right now to change this situation for the better?” When you change the questions in your head to focus on what you can do to solve problems and change your situation, you’re automatically empowering yourself to do better. You’re thinking like an entrepreneur, and that will help you get out of your current situation with some creative problem solving.

It’s easy to let negative thoughts take over your life without even knowing it. You get in the habit of looking at yourself critically in the mirror, and then you look at other people critically, as well. You think about how much you hate your job or how messy the house is. This works against you, but it’s actually surprisingly easy to stop all those negative thoughts when you’re aware of them.

Be conscious of the things running through your head. When you catch yourself thinking something negative, replace it with something positive. When you think something like, “Ugh, I can’t stand my love handles,” stop and think, “I have a really engaging smile.” Do this actively throughout the day, with all of your thoughts, and it’ll soon become habit. You’ll feel more relaxed, happy, and confident, which will help you make the next move for your business with ease.

The more you empower yourself through acceptance, the right questions, and positive thoughts, the more you’ll believe in yourself and the easier it will be to continue your journey toward starting and growing a successful business.
