Taking time to relax? It can sound like quite the lofty goal as an entrepreneur. If you recently started your own business, or even if you’ve been at it for a few years, relaxing or taking a break can make you feel guilty. After all, the work never ends, and if you want to be successful you must be able to work all the time! Unfortunately, this is the kind of mindset that I’ve found many entrepreneurs have.
While it may seem like working 24/7 will help you be more successful, it actually has quite the opposite effect. Working yourself too hard will only leave you feeling burned out and exhausted – definitely not leading to the success you’ve dreamed of. Instead, it’s time that you realize the importance of recharging and relaxing.
Here are some great tips for helping you disconnect from your work, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Giving these things a try will help you feel better, and you will feel much more productive and motivated once you get back to work.
Journaling is a surprisingly effective method for reducing stress. Try writing in your journal every morning or evening, and use it as a way to dump all of those irrelevant thoughts out of your head. Write down anything and everything that comes to your mind, including thoughts, feelings, concerns, questions, ideas, goals, etc. Giving yourself the chance to rid your mind of built up thoughts can help free up valuable brainpower that you can use for your business.
GIVE MEDITATION A TRY
Yoga tends to be one of the most popular ways to meditate, as it calms the mind and keeps you in good shape. But even if you don’t care to give yoga a try, meditation can be as easy as taking a few minutes of stillness to find peace within yourself. Meditation is a great way to clear your mind of clutter and other unnecessary thoughts. Or if you want another way to slow down, and be productive, try picking up a book instead. Whatever you choose to do, set aside time for daily meditation.
TAKE A POWER NAP
Whether you worked late the night before or you are simply feeling a bout of afternoon sluggishness, taking a short power nap can improve your performance better than a cup of coffee can. Taking time for a short 20 minute nap can help enhance alertness, concentration and mood. Or if you are able to, try squeezing in a 90 minute nap which can enhance creativity. A power nap is a great way to unwind and take a break when you are feeling sleepy and unproductive, plus you’re in good company as Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison were all known for appreciating a good afternoon nap!
WORK ON A HOBBY
One of the best ways to rid your mind of the stress of work is to keep yourself busy with something else you enjoy. Try out a hobby that you love to do or even consider something new. Anything from woodworking to photography, and playing music and sports can be a great way for you to relax and enjoy some quality time away from the office.
DISCONNECT FROM WORK
This one is often most difficult for entrepreneurs, but it is perhaps one of the most important. When you’re home from work, actually be home. This means putting away the laptop and phone, and not constantly checking for a new email or phone call. Put away work for the evening, and give your family the time and attention that they need and deserve.
SPEND TIME OUTDOORS
This is one of my favorite ways to unwind, as I feel like entrepreneurs spend the majority of their time indoors. Whether you enjoy hiking, swimming, camping or playing sports, spending some quality time outdoors, with the fresh air and exercise, is sure to help you feel more energized and refreshed when you head back to the office.
Remember that all work and no play (or in this case relaxation) will not get you farther ahead in your business or in life. Giving yourself some much needed rest and relaxation will help you to refresh your mind and body, and prevent you from losing sight of what’s truly important.
