Very rarely have I seen anyone just walk away from everything and start a business. Usually, people don’t have the kinds of funds it takes to do this. If they did, we would never even have a show called Shark Tank. People would be able to do it all on their own. In reality, starting a new company takes a good deal of money. At the same time, you can’t very well stop bringing in money when you have bills like a house payment and a car loan. As a result, if you want to start a business, you will probably need to continue working at your current job until that new company gets on its feet.

However, before you make the decision to juggle a start-up, your personal responsibilities, and a full-time job, there are some things you will need to consider.

Obviously, if you continue working while starting a company, then you have a safety net. If something goes wrong with your start-up, you will still have a source of income. Any time you begin a company, you are taking a big risk. While some people would say you need to throw your all in it and take that risk, that just isn’t realistic for some people. You may not be in a position to just quit everything and take a leap of faith. You may have responsibilities that require steady income. So, there is nothing wrong with needing that safety net.

One drawback that you will most certainly want to take into consideration is the fact that you will not have any free time. You will be spending all of your time either working at your full-time job or dealing with your start-up. You have to be prepared to have no free time. It may even take you away from your family for a while. But keep in mind that it is only temporary. Once your business does get off the ground, you will be able to quit your full-time job and focus solely on your company.

One of the things I look for in people is a passion, drive, and want-to when it comes to a business. I need to know that they are truly driven to turn this into something successful. If they look at their idea as a hobby, they won’t be very passionate about it and they won’t dedicate their time to the business as they should. I look for this because it is so important to a company’s success.

If you start a business while you are working full time, it is easy to look at your little endeavor as nothing more than a hobby. If you do this, then you won’t have the dedication and the drive to make that business become successful. Make sure this is something you are passionate about and not something you see as just a hobby.

For many people, starting a business while working full-time is their only option. And that makes sense if you don’t have the cash readily available to cover your expenses and a start-up. If you are considering doing this, make sure you take all of these things into consideration. That way, you can be sure all of the time consumption and the sacrifices you will make will be worth the end result.
