Being your own boss is one of the most coveted ideas in the world. It’s the American Dream, but so many people think that it’s just not possible for them, at least not right now. They say things like, “It’s just not the right time for me,” or “Maybe in a few years, when I’m more stable.”

Well, there’s never going to be a “perfect” time to quit working for someone else and become your own boss, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dreams of being an entrepreneur. And, as you build up a portfolio of work and a stable of clients, you’ll start to gain a reputation in your industry. You can use that reputation to build your brand to hire other consultants or contractors and start your own consulting firm. And it all starts with a little bit of side work that you can do in your free time.

If you’re a natural-born salesperson and you love getting people excited about great ideas and great products, you might want to consider signing on as an agent or representative for an existing brand that you like and believe in. Finally, if you have some investment capital saved or you have investors you can turn to, there’s no better time than right now to dive in and start your own business.
