Being your own boss is one of the most coveted ideas in the world. It’s the American Dream, but so many people think that it’s just not possible for them, at least not right now. They say things like, “It’s just not the right time for me,” or “Maybe in a few years, when I’m more stable.”

Well, there’s never going to be a “perfect” time to quit working for someone else and become your own boss, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dreams of being an entrepreneur. Check out these different ways that you can build your own business and take the necessary steps to be your own boss starting right now.

Can you impose your own deadlines and stick to them? Are you good at writing and pitching proposals? If you’re creative, driven, and you have skills that other individuals and/or businesses need, you could start working for yourself right now as a consultant or contractor. And you don’t even have to quit your day job right away.

From marketing to business analysis and everything in between, there’s a whole world of opportunities out there for freelancers. And, as you build up a portfolio of work and a stable of clients, you’ll start to gain a reputation in your industry. You can use that reputation to build your brand to hire other consultants or contractors and start your own consulting firm. And it all starts with a little bit of side work that you can do in your free time.

If you’re a natural-born salesperson and you love getting people excited about great ideas and great products, you might want to consider signing on as an agent or representative for an existing brand that you like and believe in. In general, there is a small cost of entry for striking out on your own this way, but it’s very affordable, especially if you have the drive to get out there and start selling.

The best part about this approach to being your own boss is that you have a wide variety of options. You could start as a real estate agent representing an established agency, and then you could take the experience, connections, and skills you gain from this to start your own agency. You could also work as a sales representative for one or more brands that you like and that all complement each other for a particular target audience. Then you could build your brand as a rep and take on more brands as your reputation grows.

Finally, if you have some investment capital saved or you have investors you can turn to, there’s no better time than right now to dive in and start your own business. If you’re not sure about launching your own startup, there are numerous franchise opportunities where you can buy into a ready-made brand and focus all of your attention on building your team and getting the word out about your products and/or services in your area.

The franchise model isn’t for everyone, of course. If you have a great idea for a new business, you really shouldn’t feel like you have to wait for the “right” time to get started. Just like some of the other options I’ve mentioned here, you can start part-time and move to full-time as your business grows. Or you can create your business plan, approach investors, and get the capital you need to go all-in from the beginning.

Stop waiting for the “perfect” time to be your own boss. Take some time to think about these great options and start your journey today.
